While most of the larger businesses and corporates were struggling to get through the pandemic, many smaller companies were getting by just fine. The national lockdown implemented in many parts of the world forced a lot of companies to change their processes if they wanted to continue functioning.
While these changes are a lot easier for smaller companies, they take a lot more work when they have to be implemented in larger ones since their processes are a lot more static, cemented over years of work, so cannot be changed overnight. The perfect example of making a change that would benefit the company was remote working, which was the solution to getting any work done since most people were confined to their homes and not planning on leaving unless they had to.
Most of the businesses in the UK got on board with the changes and began remote working. There were a few companies who were the exceptions who could not make this leap because of the restrictions in the work that they handled. Industries like construction, hospitality, healthcare, and mechanical work were options of companies that worked in person since the bulk of their work needed to be a little hands-on. While they were adapting to the online process and taking small parts of the work that they did to the internet, they were allowing for the online interaction with their clients. Registrations, DIY details in some cases, and other helpful information were available online to benefit clients.
With all the changes that were taking place, the number of people losing their jobs was significantly increasing. The current unemployment rate in the UK is 4.1% which is high than 3.9%, which is where it was for the last couple of months. The Government knew that this would be a lot worse when they stopped their furlough schemes, so they were trying to get the economy to stabilize in the meantime.
They decided to do this by slowly opening the economy and making sure that people were taking the necessary precautions and supporting smaller businesses. The beginning of August did show some positive signs, but they were not as good as they speculated, however, things started looking up in September.
Employers are adapting to these changes and left with no choice but to go through multiple rounds of layoffs to stay afloat since they are not making enough to keep the number of people they initially employed. Even with the Government schemes, it is not enough to get through.
Furthermore, since most of the meetings are online, teams within companies have not worked in person for a long time. In some cases, there have been new additions to the team who have not worked in person ever. These changes were becoming challenging for employers, and this is one of the reasons why they started handling background checks.
