iPhone XR is best-selling smartphone in first half of 2019
When Apple decided to launch an affordable iPhone last year, alongside the bigger and more expensive ones, everyone was caught off-guard (in a good way). The iPhone XR was revolutionary, and continues to remain so. According to a new report from IHS Market, around 26.9 million units of the iPhone XR have been shipped in the first quarter of 2019 that make it the best-selling smartphone in the world. This despite the fact that the iPhone XR was launched last year in September alongside the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max.
The reason for iPhone XR shipments going up drastically compared to other iPhone models is clearly some of the recent price drops of the device. The iPhone XR was launched in India with a starting price of Rs 76,900 for the base 64GB storage model. The 128GB variant of the iPhone XR launched with a price of Rs 81,900 while the 256GB variant of the phone comes with a price of Rs 91,900.
Some months post the launch, Apple dropped the price of the iPhone XR as a part of a promotional offer. After applying the promotional offer consumers were able to get the phone for starting price of Rs 53,900. This was the price of the 64GB RAM model of the iPhone. The price of 128GB storage model of the iPhone XR went down to Rs 64,900 while the 256GB storage model of the iPhone was now for Rs 74,900.
The market research report notes a total of 13.6 million iPhone XR units were shipped in the first quarter of 2019 and 13.3 million units shipped in the second quarter. This totals to 26.9 million units are the first half of 2019.
The IHS Market report also shows a total of 10 smartphones that were most demanding in the first half of 2019. The list starts with iPhone XR with 26.9 million units shipped followed by Samsung Galaxy A10 (13.4 mn units), Samsung Galaxy A50 (12.0 mn units), Apple iPhone 8 (10.3 mn units), Xiaomi Redmi 6A (10.0 mn units), Redmi Note 7 (10.0 mn units), Galaxy J2 Core (9.9 mn units), OPPO A5 (9.7 mn units), Apple iPhone XS Max (9.6 mn units) and Galaxy A30 (9.2 mn units).
The tech giant recently launched the successor to the X series – the iPhone 11. The devices introduced by Apple on September 10 include iPhone 11 Pro, Watch Series 5, Apple Arcade, Apple TV and much-awaited iOS 13 for Apple game subscription.
