Qualcomm to bring 5G-capable Snapdragon 6 & 7 chipsets
This year has been the world’s first steps towards embracing the future of connectivity in the form of 5G. And 2020 is going to be the year of large-scale 5G expansion. However, currently, if you have access to a 5G network, the choice of devices that support it are limited and all these phones come with a premium price tag. Qualcomm is planning to tackle that issue next year by introducing 6 and 7 series Snapdragon SoCs with integrated 5G modems.
The Snapdragon 8 Series is already ushering the first wave of 5G capable phones and will continue to do so in the flagship sector next year, but the company intends to expand its 5G presence to more affordable devices.
Global smartphone makers, including OPPO, realme, Redmi, Vivo, HMD and LG, are prepared to incorporate Qualcomm’s upcoming 5G platform in their midrange offerings with the new Snapdragon 7 series. These chipsets will be built on the 7nm process and are expected to be commercially ready as early as Q4 2019. The Snapdragon 6 series will bring the full 5G experience to even more consumers around the world in the second half of 2020.
Qualcomm has said that the expanded 5G portfolio will feature support for all key regions on the global stage and will offer solutions for both mmWave and sub-6Ghz spectrum networks. There should be more details available about this in the coming months, but for now, we can all rejoice in the fact that 5G is soon going to be a reality for everyone with a smartphone.
