What the desk accepts from outside contributors and what it does not.
We do take outside contributions, and we turn down most of what arrives. This page exists so that the answer is predictable before anyone spends an evening writing.
What the desk accepts
- Explainers. One number, one setting, one specification line, and what actually changes when it changes. This is the largest part of Know your phone and the easiest pitch to get accepted.
- Long-form comparisons built on the specification fields we already publish, so a reader can follow the argument back into the sheets.
- Market and supply-chain analysis with the figures sourced — a named report, a regulator filing, a manufacturer document.
What it does not
- Anything written to carry a link. A post whose reason for existing is the third paragraph is not a post.
- Rewritten press releases, rewritten spec tables, and text that repeats what a data sheet on this site already says.
- Machine-written filler, "top 10" lists assembled from other top 10 lists, and casino, loan, crypto, pharma or adult placements in any wrapper.
- Material already published elsewhere, including on the author's own site.
Rules that are not negotiable
Every factual claim needs a source a reader can reach. Outbound links are editorial: they go where they help the reader, they are counted, and a paid link is marked as paid. We edit for length, structure and house style without asking, and we will change a headline. If the piece needs a disclosure — the author works for a party named in the text — the disclosure runs with it. Payment does not move a piece from the second list into the first; a paid placement is an advertising enquiry, and it is handled as one.
How to pitch
Send two or three sentences to [email protected] with guest post in the subject: the claim the piece makes, the sources behind it, and a link to something you have written. Not the finished draft — we would rather agree the angle first than reject 1,200 words. Silence after two weeks means no.
